Claudine UWAMALIYA - Born in Ruhango / Kinazi in 1986
At 8 years old, Claudine lost her parents and 8 siblings during the genocide. She survived along with her elder sister due to: hiding in bushes/houses; fleeing to the Congo and eventually being brought to an orphanage by the Red Cross. When she was 13, she was forced to look after herself as the family she was living with no longer had the means to look after her. She returned to her birth place and, along with her sister, constructed a small house where she still lives today. Claudine would like to study Information Management at University, with the aim of becoming a Bank Manager.
Josephine NIGWIZE - born in Girarama in 1982
Josephine lost her parents and 7 of her siblings during the genocide. She was taken to a mass grave to be killed, however survived along with her younger sister. She was 12 years old. Josephine and her sister struggle to get good on a daily basis, and only eat when they get somewhere to labour, which pays them very little money. With financial support, Josephine would like to study Tourism and Management at University.
Adeodatus UFITINEMA - born in Muhanga in 1986
Adeodatus was 8 years old during the genocide. He lost two elder brothers, and survived with his Father and 1 brother. However, his brother died as a result of his injuries and he now lives with his father – who was seriously injured during the genocide. Throughout school, Adeodatus has had to look after his Father who has been hospitalised several times, along with working in order to provide food etc. He would like to study the following subjects at university: Public Work; Electronics and Telecommunication; Computer Science; and Civil Engineering.
Benjamin NIYIMPA - born in Cyangugu in 1985
Benjamin is from a family of four brothers and five sisters. Benjamin was 9 years old during the genocide and lost his father, four brothers and 1 of his sisters. He now lives with his mother, who is HIV positive as a result of being raped during the genocide, and four sisters. With financial support, Benjamin would like to attend university to enable him to get a good job so he can support his family.
Yves MURASHI HITIMANA - Born in Nyarugenge in 1988
During the genocide, Yves was 6 years old and lost his father and eldest brother. His mother was badly injured, and lost her sight and speech. He currently lives with his Mother and 5 siblings who he helps look after as a result of his mother’s condition. Yve needs financial support to enable him to study Management at University.
