Denise's Story

For many years prior to the genocide Denise faced constant threats from Hutu extremists who persecuted her husband. They had to live in separate towns and could only meet secretly at night. Four relatives and a visitor were killed in her house when the genocide began. Denise believes God protected her supernaturally as killers raised their swords to kill her many times but were always stopped from bringing them down.

She was pregnant at the time and gave birth to her son in a pool of blood under a bed in the house she was hiding in with her dead relatives. “After the genocide we lived in tears, sorrow and suffering. But when we came to Solace we were comforted and started having love and hope for the future. It is our new family where we have new parents sisters and friends and don’t feel alone anymore.” Denise now works with Solace comforting and counselling other survivors.

After outlining the background to the genocide and the church in Rwanda, author Callum Henderson of Comfort Rwanda, takes the reader through the horror and hope of 1994 and the subsequent years of recovery.

The stories are intensely personal and deeply moving and give an insight, through the lives of those who lived through the genocide, of what life then and now is really like and the difference God is making to survivors.
